Amritsar to have own food street
AMRITSAR: For those who've visited Amritsar for its Golden Temple and Jallianwala Bagh, the union food processing ministry's choice of the city for setting up a dedicated food street has come as no surprise. Eating out has always been an experience in the city, known for its naan, kulcha, puri-chholey, makki di roti and sarson da saag and Ambarsari machhi.
"Ethnic dishes attract tourists and if provided at one place, which also boasts of civic amenities and infrastructure, it would definitely be a huge boost for the tourism industry.Amritsar is one of the four cities selected from across the country for setting up food streets. It (food street) will provide tourists an opportunity to stay up late and enjoy night life. No longer will visitors have to follow locals as they head to their favourite sidewalk vendors or crowd into small cafes tucked down back alleys."
Fascinated by the idea, the administration has set aside Rs 25 lakh for preparing a detailed project report and identified land at the rear of Panorama Centre for the project.
Like the food street in Lahore, Amritsar will also attract tourists in large numbers. Nearly one lakh people visit the city daily to pay obeisance at the Golden Temple and watch `beating the retreat' ceremony at Attari.
